Chapter Fourteen

“I’m going to take you to see your mother,” Drago said to her one day out of the blue. Eve had been buried and gone for nearly a week, but everyone could see that Ally wasn’t the same. She slept a lot and cried randomly. Drago knew that she needed a boost that they couldn’t give her, and so he decided on the ultimate surprise.

“What?” she asked, perking up from the book she was reading on the couch. “Really?”

“Yes,” he said. “And I’ve arranged it all.”

“Does Jean Luc know?” she asked.

“No,” Drago said. “But I’m sure that it will be fine.”

Ally bit her lip. She wasn’t sure whether this was a good idea, but she was desperate to see her mother. She knew that her mother was probably upset and alone in this safe house. And although they could talk more freely now that she was behind closed doors, Ally knew she was lonely.

“Ok,” she said. “When could we be ready to go?”

“Whenever you like,” Drago said. “It’s all arranged.”

“Really?” she said, in shock. She was used to having to wait hours from the brothers to find a safe route somewhere. The fact that they could just walk out the door was exciting, especially given her week. “Now?”

“If you want to,” he said. No one else was home, and Ally jumped up and kissed him full on the lips. He was surprised, but he kissed her back. “What was that?”

“Thank you,” she said. “It’s just what I need.”

She grabbed her purse and followed Drago out the door. He had gone through extra effort to pack a lovely lunch and had her favorite tunes on the radio. She was smiling before they were three miles away.

“We have four hours of guaranteed safety,” he said. “Do you think that will be enough?”

“I’m thrilled for twenty seconds on the phone with her,” Ally said. “And while four hours won’t be enough for the rest of my life, it’s perfect for now.”

Drago grinned, glad that he could make her happy. Part of it was out of the goodness of his heart, and part of it was that she wasn’t going to be inclined to help any of them if she was upset.

The drive was long, and Ally resisted falling asleep in the front seat. She had no idea where her mother was being kept, and her heart sank as they continued to drive.

“How far away is this?” she asked.

“Not far,” Drago said. “It’s just important that even you don’t understand where we are going.”

“Why?” she asked.

“Because if something happens to you, if you are captured, they can’t torture information out of you that you don’t have.”

“You don’t really think that this could happen, do you?” she asked.

“I don’t know,” Drago said. “But Jean Luc says that it’s always better to be prepared.”

“Absolutely,” Ally replied, although she felt half-dead inside. The only thing that was giving her a spark was the fact that she would see her mother soon.

Finally, they arrived at a small cabin in the woods.
